More than 40 years after Donald Campbell’s last water speed record attempt on Coniston Water, his hydroplane Blue Bird K7 is being restored and preparations are underway for her return to the village. This Bluebird Garden presents a timely tribute to this heroic figure and his iconic craft.
All boats attempting the world water speed record have to carry an infinity symbol painted on their hull.
This distinctive figure-of-eight design is the main feature of the Bluebird Garden and has been recreated in traditional dry stone walling.
The lower loop of the symbol encloses a pool of water and the naturalistic planting scheme reflects the rugged landscape of the lakes, incorporating silver birches, lush green foliage and white planting, punctuated of course with blue to link the whole scheme to its watery theme.
